Botox® is the most common procedure performed in cosmetic clinics. It works by temporarily relaxing the muscles it is injected into. Contrary to popular belief, it is not a toxin, but a purified protein extracted and there are no live bacteria present.

Botox® works on the active muscles and reduces the lines that appear on our face as we move these muscles, such as the frown lines and crow's feet around the eyes. 
Active lines on the face can be distinguished from static lines or wrinkles as they are only visible when the muscles contract. This has the effect of accentuating the lines. Static lines are visible when the face is at rest and the muscles are relaxed. These lines are usually due to sun damage and aging.

With professional administration, the effects are completely natural and it will not be obvious that you have had any treatment at all. You will still be able to smile, frown and even look surprised. The only difference will be that the active lines usually seen during these facial expressions will be absent, giving you a youthful and refreshed appearance.

Once the prescription has been issued a health questionnaire will need to be completed and informed consent given. 

The areas to be treated will be discussed and after that, the procedure will take approximately 20 - 30 minutes. A series of tiny injections will be given at the desired sites, the amount of injections will depend very much on the area and the extent of the lines to be softened. There is no need for an anaesthetic although the area may be numbed either by application of an ice pack or creams such as Emla which have a local anaesthetic effect.

After the treatment there may be some slight bruising at the injection site but this should settle relatively quickly and can be covered with make-up. To ensure optimum results, post treatment care is important and full details will be given to you before you leave the clinic. A follow-up consultation will be arranged for a fortnight after your treatment and you will then have a chance to view the before and after effects.

The effects of Botox® will normally be apparent between 5 - 14 days and the effects can last between 4 - 7 months and with continued use, the effects can begin to last longer between treatments.
